 Barton Creek Resort & Spa's Fazio Foothills, Crenshaw Cliffside, and
Palmer Lakeside courses have achieved designation as a “Certified
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
System (ACSS) -- the educational division of Audubon International, endorsed
by the United States Golf Association.
The Fazio Foothills and Crenshaw Cliffside courses are ranked 5th and the
Palmer Lakeside course is ranked 6th in Texas. The courses are the 158th and
163rd in the world, respectively.
In 1991, our Texas golf vacation destination joined the Audubon Cooperative
Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses … which provides information and
guidance to those wishing to preserve and enhance wildlife and natural
resources on golf courses.
“Barton Creek Resort has shown a strong commitment to this environmental
program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for
wildlife on the golf course property,” said Joellen Zeh, staff ecologist
for the Cooperative Sanctuary System. “To reach certification, a course
must demonstrate that they maintain a high degree of environmental quality in
a number of areas.”
These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat
Management, Outreach and Education, Integrated Pest Management, Water
Conservation and Water Quality Management. Golf courses from the United
States, Canada and Europe have also achieved certification in this program.
Additionally, Barton Creek Resort is the proud recipient of the 2001 GCSAA
National Environmental Steward Award. This was achieved by demonstrating the
excellence in technology use as it applies to day to day operations, resource
conservation, water quality management, integrated pest management, wildlife
and habitat management, and public outreach and education.

staff who continually educated themselves on issues pertaining to golf and the environment,” stated Anne Hickman, environmental landscape coordinator
for Barton Creek Resort.
Texas’ best golf course, the Fazio Canyons at Barton Creek Resort &
Spa, has become the first resort course in Texas to achieve the prestigious
distinction as a certified Audubon International Signature Sanctuary after
meeting strict environmental criteria.
Signature certification is awarded only to new developments, which are
designed, constructed, and maintained according to Audubon International
’s precise planning standards and environmental disciplines. Wildlife
conservation, habitat enhancement, resource conservation and environmental
improvement are integral parts of the project development and regular reports
and site audits are required to maintain the certification.
In addition to the Fazio Canyons’ Signature distinction, Barton Creek
Resort & Spa’s three other award-winning courses -- Fazio Foothills,
Crenshaw Cliffside, and Palmer Lakeside -- already have achieved the Certified
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary designation. Of the estimated 16,000 golf
courses in the United States, only 2,300 are affiliated with the Audubon
Cooperative Sanctuary program, and less than 50 courses in the world have
achieved the highly coveted Signature status.
